Report of the Field Study conducted by Department of Sociology at Tingya Naga Village, Sivsagar, 3rd June,2022

 

 





A team of students of Department of Sociology, Namrup College has conducted a Field Study at Tingya Naga Village, Sibsagar on 3rd June, 2022. The distance from Namrup College to the Naga village is about 74km. A total of 22 nos students from BA 6th  Semester Honours guided by 4nos teaching faculty has conducted the field tour and surveyed 32 households on various aspects of the Naga society and their changes. The study mainly focused to explore the transformation of the Naga Society in the fields of economy, culture, religion and education.

Objective of the Field Study : By doing field study students gets opportunity to develop their creative thinking, to enhance their cognitive and effective  learning through realistic field situation. Students are encouraged to improve their scientific curiosity. Being students of Sociology, to acquainted with the Research Methodology they were trained and guided to collect data from the universe and to make analytical discussion on their findings. The Tingya Naga village , with 72 nos of households of Konyak Naga Tribe is situated in the eastern direction of Sivsagar Town, Assam is the universe of this study. This historical Naga village surrounded by the greater Assamese society has been undergone changes in various aspects of their socio-cultural, traditional, religious and economic life. This field study was aimed to explore the nature and extent of these changes of the Naga people living in upper Assam.

Outcome of the Field Study: The students gained incredible field experience in their interaction with the respondents. Interview schedule and observation method were adopted as a tool for data collection. The areas of their studies were confined to four dimensions, viz, economic aspects and its changes, religious beliefs and practices, cultural changes and educational changes. Most of the respondents were found to engage in agriculture and petty business followed by daily wage earners. Majority of the Naga people have savings habit or have bank account and some of them have also invested in insurance policies. Though all the respondents are following Hinduism, they also perform traditional tribal festivals and rituals. The existence of youth dormitory called ‘Murong’ is seen in the village, where traditional norms and culture of Konyak Naga tribe is practiced. The Naga dialect is still used as a form of communication among their own people, otherwise they are all fluent in Assamese language and some in Hindi and English. Inter caste marriage has been observed among them, and mostly marital relation have been taken places with Assamese people. During their traditional festival only, they used to wear their traditional dresses and ornaments, and use traditional food ‘waaksa’, otherwise they find the modern dress more comfortable to wear. They are fond of their traditional alcohol ‘yu’ in their festive time. Most of the Naga people residing in Tingya Naga village are literate and they are aware about the importance of education. The children of most of the respondents are availing formal education in private educational institution than the govt schools.  In a nutshell , it can be said that the Konyak Naga people of Tingya Naga village has been experiencing a vast change amidst the Assamese society in the modern world.
